“We are going to go broke from buying dry shampoo and throw pillows” … My husband tells me this about every other day hahaha There is a hatred for the dry shampoo and throw pillow purchases in my house because David just can’t understand why they cost so much for what they do. Well, I wanted to try and prove David wrong and figure out a way to save some money, at least on one of those things… Dry Shampoo!

One of my best friends also named Emily, introduced me to this awesome DIY d
Let me talk a little more about the ingredients first:

Arrowroot Powder
I had only heard of this powder a few times before Emily introduced me to this recipe. Arrowroot powder is used as a thickening agent when cooking (kind of like corn starch). This powder is an all natural ingredient and in this DIY recipe it is the main agent soaking up the grease in our hair. And it is very affordable in bulk!
Essential Oils
I think essentials oils smell amazing and have so many great benefits to our physical and emotional health. Lavender oil is my favorite oil because it not only smells amazing but is great for skin support. So adding it to this DIY dry shampoo is a must!
This recipe also contains rosemary and cedarwood essential oil. Rosemary and cedarwood are said to promote hair growth and shine. Now I am not an expert on oils, but I am an “oil believer” and have had essentials oils benefit not only my emotional health but physical health as well! So adding rosemary and cedarwood was a no brainer 🙂
I use Young Living Essential Oils and I love them! If you want to purchase Young Living oils click here and then search for the oil you want to purchase.
Cocoa Powder
Cocoa powder is optional, but totally recommend if you have dark hair. The cocoa powder gives the dry shampoo a brown tint and makes it easier
Makeup Brush + Container
You will also need a container and makeup brush for storing and easy application.

Recipe
Ingredients:
Blonde hair:
¼ cup arrowroot powder
-2 drops Lavender oil
-2 drops Rosemary oil
-2 drops Cedarwood oil
Darker hair:

-2 drops Cedarwood oil
**If you want to purchase Young Living oils click here and then search for the oil you want to purchase.
*This recipe would work without the essential oils, but you won’t get that amazing smell or hair support the oils offer.
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and mix until fully combined. Put mixed dry shampoo into container and brush onto greasy hair with a makeup brush.

Since I already had the essential oils and cocoa powder, this DIY Dry Shampoo only cost me the price of the 16oz bag of arrowroot powder (That I only used 2
One batch of my DIY Dry Shampoo will last me about four months!!! WHAT??? CRAZY!! One bottle of store bought dry shampoo only lasts me about 3-4 weeks. So I would say this is a win!
This recipe has been a great addition to my beauty routine and now my husband can no longer say that dry shampoo is going to make us go broke!! But throw pillows might…. 😉

So interesting! I have never heard of arrowroot powder! Sounds great!
Yes! Give it a try! I really wanted to try it since it can save so much money and it turns out it works great! It’s a little messier than the aerosol can, but I’m fine with that 🙂
This is awesome Emily! I just bought more dry shampoo and noticed how $$ is was for the ‘cheaper’ brand full of chemicals! And I go through it so fast!
Can’t wait to make this!!
I’m so glad you want to try this out! I really like it and it saves SO much money!! Let me know how you like it!
How creative! I look forward to trying this!
Thank you, Jenna! I would love to know what you think of it!
Since this was posted awhile ago, has anyone tried it? How does it work?
Heidi, I use this recipe every day (except those that I wash my hair of course) 🙂 SO affordable and easy to use!
Wouldn’t they cocoa powder make your hair either sticky, or smell bad or something?
Curious to try it! But I have darker hair!
Ana, it’s so minimal when you actually use the brush to put it in your hair that I have never even noticed the smell! It’s definitely not sticky at all. When I shower after using the dry shampoo for 3-4 days, my shower sometimes smells VERY slightly like hot cocoa ha! But that doesn’t happen all the time. It washes out very nicely. Let me know how you think if you try it 🙂
