For the past two years I have had hatred towards my utensil drawer in my kitchen. I’m not a fancy cook so I really only use a few utensils everyday and the chaos in that drawer was really making me mad every time I looked in it. I finally got around to creating a DIY Drawer Organizer for my utensil drawer and it was easy, affordable and took me 30 mins.
Below I have the supplies and steps for you to create your own organizer!
Supplies:
- Painter’s Tape
- Wood 2.5″ W (Make sure the wood piece is thin enough so that you can still close the drawer once the organizer is made. I used maple wood, but you can really use any kind of wood that you want)
- Miter Saw
- Nail Gun & Air Compressor
- Nails
- Power drill
- Drill bit
- Screws
Step 1: DECLUTTER
This is my favorite step and MUST not be skipped. Like I said before, I am not a fancy cook so I only use certain utensils on a daily basis. I use rubber scrapers, tongs and spatulas everyday, that’s it! So I decided to keep these utensils in my main utensil drawer and then move the utensils I don’t use regularly (ie: large spoons, whisk, garlic press, potato masher) to a different drawer or to my cute utensil holder. BOOM! My drawer already looks so much better
Step 2: Determine layout of Drawer
Organize like items and like sizes together and layout them out in your drawer like I did in the picture below:
Step 3: Use Painters Tape to map out Layout
This step just helps me visualize and measure:
Step 4: Make your first cut
I chose to make the longest piece of the drawer my first cut and then build everything off of that piece. See below:
Step 5: Measure and Make the rest of the cuts
I based all of my other cuts off of the my first cut:
Step 6: Nail & Screw the wood Pieces Together
Nail the wood pieces together using a nail gun. To add extra support screw the wood pieces together as well.
Step 7: Make sure the organizer fits into you drawer:
Now some of you make need to glue your wood pieces to the drawer if your wood piece do not touch. I would recommend using VERY small amounts of Liquid Nails or another stronger glue. You could screw your pieces into the drawer, but that is obviously more permanent and could potentially ruin your drawer if not done properly.
Step 8: Remove the painters tape and replace your utensils
Place the utensils back in the drawer and gaze at your decluttered, beautifully organized drawer 🙂
