Decorating on a Budget: Part 1

I have spent a lot of time finding ways to save money on decorating my home.  My husband is a very frugal, budget watching guy, so in order to convince him we “need” decor, I find ways to buy beautiful decor on a budget!  I have quite a few tips so I decided to share these tips with you in a two-part post. Here is the first half of my money saving tips for decorating your house on a budget!

Part 1 of decorating on a budget. How to buy rugs, lighting and furniture on a budget.

Rugs

Let’s start with one of my favorite things…Rugs!!!  I love rug shopping and I think a rug can bring an entire room together.  I found this amazing rug website called RugsUSA.com. It is seriously amazing!! At first I thought the website seemed too good to be true, but believe me, it isn’t!!  Tip: I ALWAYS wait to buy a rug until there is a 50-55% off sale to save even more money!

This rug design is my absolute favorite, so naturally, I got two; one for our hallway and one for the entryway:

Navy, blue and pink rug from rugsusa.com

3X5 entry rug: $34.50

2×8 runner: $51.00

Our living room was a little too gray after we got our new carpet so I knew I wanted to add a pop of color and a rug was just what I needed:

5X7.5 Living Room Rug: $74.50

I have also bought rugs on Amazon, LuLu & Georgia and Target.  These places have pretty good prices when it comes to the smaller rugs, but if you are searching for a larger rug, I highly recommend RugsUSA.com!  The one con with RugsUSA.com is if you do not like the rug, you have to pay for shipping to return it.

Pillows

Throw pillows are beautiful but SO expensive!!!  I don’t love spending money on throw pillows but I do think they are a very important and fun aspect to decorating.  I buy most of my throw pillows at Tj Maxx and Target.

Another option I have found that is actually really affordable is buying 18X18 pillow inserts on Amazon and then look for 18X18 pillow covers on Amazon or another store.  This allows you to change out the covers when you get sick of them or for different seasons.  Just search for pillow covers on Amazon and you will find lots!

Lighting

Lighting is something I think a lot of people look past, but what they do not realize is that lighting can really update a room!  We have purchased a few lights for our home so far. We like Lowe’s because they have lots of styles and we can use discounted gift cards. Wayfair and Birch Lane are also great options for even more affordable styles and trends.  We just bought this light from Wayfair for our formal dining room.

Furniture:

Furniture is always expensive so David and I like to shop around.  I few of my first stops for furniture are Cost Plus World Market, Pier1 Imports, Target, Amazon and Wayfair/Birch Lane/Joss & Main.  World Market and Pier1 have great coupon codes (20%-30% off!) on a regular basis. Like I have preached before, being patient and planning out what you want to purchase is a must when you want to save money on large items like furniture.
