Curtains on a Budget

I LOVE curtains! Curtains can add so much to a room, but they can also be very expensive! This post summarizes my experience with researching and buying curtains on a budget.

What Length of curtains should you get?

In my opinion the longer the better! We have eight-foot ceilings in our house so I ALWAYS make sure the curtains I buy are at least 95 inches in length.  Curtains the entire height of your wall makes a room look so much taller, it is amazing!

Where do I buy my Curtains?
TJ Maxx:

I found my curtains for our living room.  TJ-Maxx is the most affordable place to purchase quality, stylish curtains!

I got these gray curtains (four panels total) for our living room for under $30 per panel!!   They are 95 inches, blackout and have grommets.  TJ-Maxx usually sells their curtains in a two-panel pack and the styles in stock are beautiful and trendy!

Kohl’s:

The curtains in our master bedroom and dining room are actually the same just different colors.  I got these curtains from Kohl’s.  Kohl’s is amazing!  I have a Kohl’s Charge Card and I try not to buy anything from Kohl’s without a 30% off coupon.

These curtains were 52”x95” and were on sale (of course they were on sale, this is Kohl’s).  The dining room required four panels of the Dusk style and our master bedroom required two panels of the Aqua style.  With my 30% off coupon,  I spent a total of $176.36 on six panels.  That is $29.40 per panel!

I also bought my kitchen curtains from Kohl’s.  These curtains are bright and beautiful with a fun splash of blue!

More Curtain Advice:

-I use the $30 per panel rule when buying my curtains because I have a very frugal husband who doesn’t understand how curtains can be so expensive 🙂  For most stores this is difficult, but at TJmaxx, Tuesday Morning and Kohl’s it is VERY possible.

-Grommets make it easier for you to open and close the curtains along the curtain rod. Grommets tend to be more expensive, but in my opinion, they are worth it!  (I am planning a tutorial on how to add grommets to your curtains really soon!)

-Buy curtains the height of your wall.  It will make your room seem more open and will give the impression of a higher ceiling.

Blackout curtains are a must for bedrooms!  They keep the sun out and can even help with your energy bill in the summertime by keeping the warmer sunlight out of your house!

– I always make a visit to TJ-Maxx and Tuesday Morning first when I know I need curtains.  If I can’t find any that interest me there, I resort to a long internet search which usually includes Kohl’s, Wayfair and Overstock.

– Most stores like Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond usually only have 84” curtains in stock at their stores.  84″ curtains are more affordable than 95” curtains, but won’t make your ceilings seem as tall.

I am always on the lookout for beautiful decor on a budget so I hope this helps you with your next curtain purchase.  Happy Curtain Shopping 🙂

  1. Nice article! Thank you for sharing. By the way, I would also suggest buying curtains made of thick fabric. Such curtains are especially good in cold seasons, as they serve as an obstacle to the cold air coming from your windows. That will help you avoid large heating bills.

  2. Great post – thank you! I want to give you one piece of advice regarding curtains 🙂 Opening the curtains in the morning will allow sunlight to penetrate your home and heat it. This way you can spend less on heating. In hot weather, on the contrary, I would advise not to open the curtains and choose curtains made of a thicker fabric. This way you can keep the house cool and use the air conditioner less.
