Paint

Giving your home a fresh new coat of paint can completely change any room in your house.  Yes, painting isn’t super fun, but believe me, you will never regret it!  I recommend you paint one room at a time starting with the rooms you plan to spend the most time in.

Lighting

My second tip for new homeowners is all about light fixtures.  If you are looking for big ways to change a space, lighting should be on the top of your list!  Moving into older homes tends to mean that the lighting will be outdated.  Start with your dining room chandelier and then tackle those boob lights 😉

HomeDepot.com, Wayfair and Amazon are great places to find affordable and beautiful lighting.

Outlets & Light Switches

Something a lot of new homeowners may not think to update when moving into their house is the outlets and light switches.  In a lot of older homes the outlets and light switches are that off white/cream color.  Updating these to white or even a more modern color like black can make a huge difference.

WARNING:  My husband and I have changed out all of our outlets in our home.  If you plan to do this, make sure you learn how and that the electricity is off!  I may or may not have shocked myself a few times 🙂

Window Treatments

Adding new curtains or shades to your windows can really update a room.  My Amazon store has my favorite curtain rods and curtains linked under window treatments where you are bound to find affordable options for your new home!

*We changed out all of our trim work for painted white trim, but this is definitely not a “simple” task. It’s something we decided we wanted to do, saved up for it and then implemented the new trim room by room.

  1. Interior lighting is one of the most important aspects of any living space; it has the ability to change the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of a room. Certain types of lighting help better with this illusion by further illuminating the walls.

  2. Thanks! It’s also interesting that you can be nominated for a free makeover. Your friends and family might be able to tell an inspiring story and make producers select your home for a makeover. Many non-profit organization have free home renovation programs. It’s worth a try, maybe 🙂

Very good write-up. I certainly love this website. Thanks!

  5. Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts on renovation process 🙂 There’s a cool tip – use ambient lighting. Lighting is second only to painting when it comes to transforming rooms on a budget. You could skip the paint altogether if the jump in lighting quality is big enough. Ambient and accent lights make the home feel alive and comforting!

  6. Painting not only improves the interior of your home, it also boosts curb appeal. The simplest way to enhance curb appeal is by applying a fresh coat that will yield the desired results. Begin by painting the gutters and trim to create a simple but significant change. Homes that look worn out or neglected can make it difficult for you to maintain your landscaping. You can determine the amount of repainting you can undertake according to your budget and needs.

  7. Thank you for the info, it’s really helpful. We people plan to redecorate the outside of the house, especially the walls because they are starting to look dull. I advise professionals to tell you your requirements such as what color you want and how you want it to be decorated before you start.

  9. Great ideas! By the way, often there is the poor air quality in old houses. To improve this, first of all, check your HVAC system. The most common cause of dust and allergens in the air is dirty air ducts and dirty filters of air conditioners. They should be cleaned at least once every three months.

  10. Great suggestions! And as for lightning, consider energy-saving light bulbs. It will make your home more energy-efficient – just what people are looking for these days.

    1. LED Light Bulb will be a good choice. It emits no heat, has no mercury, and generates a strong light, making it one of the most energy-efficient lightbulb kinds.

  16. I like the idea of hanging new curtains. They are not just an accessory to the interior design. Curtains perform several functions. They stop a passing audience from peering in. Also, they can be used to regulate the temperature of the room in which they hang, keeping the heat from outside in the summer from getting in, and the heat from inside in winter from escaping. It helps your heating and cooling systems work less hard, improving your home’s energy efficiency.

    1. You have a point. But for this, you need to choose floor-to-ceiling curtanins made of thick fabric. If you have blinds or curtain lace, you won’t get this effect.
So, yeah, invest in heavy drapes to help you maintain the temperature that you want, rather than relying on heating or air conditioning.

  17. I like your suggestions about lighting. I want also suggest to install dimmer switches. They are relatively easy to install for moderately experienced DIYers or you can opt to call a professional electrician to quickly install dimmer switches throughout your home. This allows you to customize the brightness of every room depending on the time of day and lifestyle needs. Brighten up your kitchen when you’re cooking, and lower the lighting when you’re eating.

  18. I like your suggestion! As for lighting, another good improvement to consider is switching to LED bulbs. With LED bulbs in your bedroom, living room, kitchen, and every room in between, you can cut at least $225 per year in energy costs. Plus, LEDs can live up to 25 times longer.
